According to the Australian Aviation Safety (ATSB), An unidentified woman travelling from Beijing and Melbourne suffered burns to her face, hands and hair when her battery-operated wireless headphones exploded mid-flight.

"When i was about to turn around, i felt something burn on my face. I brought out my hands to my face, and the headphones fell on my neck. I kept noticing that it burned me, so i took the off and threw them to the ground. They were sparking and had small amount of fire," The ATSB technicians quoted her saying.

Seconds later, the flight crew came by but by that time, the headphones were already melting on the cabin floor.

"I was about to stomp them to turn them off when the stewardess arrived with a bucket full of water," she explained. "They put them in the bucket and took them to the end of the place. The smell was horrible, a mixture of plastic and burnt hair. People were coughing the rest of the trip."

The ATSB team explained the importance of storing battery-powered device properly during flight. For example, a smartphone that goes out of the pocket and sneaks between the seats can overheat or be damaged if we activate the mechanisms to recline our place. They went further to warn users of using cheap low quality products and advised that people should make sure that they use devices that has the UL logo sticker which indicates that the products has passed quality control.

However, the ATSB authorities didn't specify the the brand or model of the headphones saying that it wasn't necessary.
