Unknown cyber-criminals have hacked the Nigerian ruling party, All People’s Congress (APC) and sold it to another person who then used it to sell cryptocurrencies.

The Twitter handle of the account which is @APCNigeria belongs to APC, the party in which Nigeria’s President belongs to.  The account was hacked on the 14th of July by unknown cyber-criminals and who then sold it to one named John McAfree who still maintained the name @APCNigeria.

According to reports, the Twitter account was sold to John McAfree for a fee of $2,000 and was then used for Bitcoins and other cryptocurrency transactions.

As at 14th of July, the same day that the account was hacked, the account was used to deliver an update Nigeria’s President Mohammed Buhari’s government activities before the hack.

However, the All Progressive Congress have distanced themselves from the hacked account and have created a new official Twitter handle for the party.

“For the Umpteenth time, @APCNigeria is not the official Twitter handle of the All Progressive Congress (APC). In several official statements, we have disclaimed that handle. We view this latest development as a case of criminal impersonation,” Bolaji Abdullahi, the spokesman of the APC said on his personal Twitter Account.

The Tweets promoting the sells of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have been deleted, and also, the profile photo and John McAfree’s Twitter name have been removed from the @APCNigeria Twitter handle
