Messaging service Telegram has dropped a new update v5.4 to its users on Android, brining new features such as autoplay for videos, control over automatic downloads, and alternative logout options.

Following WhatsApp and Instagram footsteps, the Telegram update brings the functionality that allows the autoplaying of videos in user chats

This feature allow videos to autoplay. That is, when a user receives a link that contains a video from YouTube or other similar platform, the video will start to play automatically without the audio. The user can then decide to unmute it at his or her own leisure.

If the user doesn't want the feature, the user can disable autoplay in the settings.

Another feature added to the Telegram update is support for controlling automatic downloads to control the amount of data the user uses. In fact, users can even set up custom settings based on chat or media type and file size.

Last on the list, Telegram is offering users alternative options to log out.

Heres the changelog for the Telegram v5.4 update
  • Autoplaying videos. Videos in chats start playing automatically, press the volume buttons on your device to turn sound on.
  • New settings for automatic media download. Control data consumption with granular precision or quickly switch between presents (Low?Medium?High)
  • Logout alternatives. The logout menu now shows alternative options to logging out.
