The coronavirus pandemic has kept many people around the world isolated from friends and family members. To keep in touch, Internet users around the world are turning to voice and video calls to communicate.

Though WhatsApp supports video and voice calling, people are looking for a platform that can accommodate the whole family at a time during a call. And that's where video conferencing app Zoom came in and shot up to fame because its ability accommodate a large group of people on a call. WhatsApp now looks to take on Zoom with its new video and voice call upgrade.

WhatsApp yesterday released v2.20.50 of its iOS client, increasing group video and voice calls with up to eight participants. An upgrade from the current four participant limit.

Now, the Facebook-owned company has officially announce in a blog post that the video and voice calls upgrade will be coming to Android users in the next WhatsApp release on the Google Play Store. Though for now, this feature is available for Android users on WhatsApp beta 2.20.143.

"Group calling has been particularly useful and our users have asked to connect with more people at once. Starting today, we're doubling the number of participants you can have on WhatsApp video or voice call from 4 to 8 people at a time," the blog post read.

iPhone users that wants to use this feature will have to upgrade their WhatsApp app to the latest version. That is, all participants will need to be on the latest version of WhatsApp.

To make the group call on WhatsApp, head over to the group and then click on the call button on the top right. If the group has more than eight participants, WhatsApp will ask which contacts you wish to call. If the member aren't up to right, the call will automatically start. Note that group participants that aren't saved in your contact won't be added to the call.
