According to a source, MaAfee, 75, was arrested on 3 October while trying to board a flight from Barcelona to Istanbul with a British passport.

"He was travelling to Istanbul and when his documents were run through the database, it emerged that he was the subject of a US warrant on fraud charges," the source said.

A judicial source said that McAfee was presented before a high court judge via a video call and sent to prison without bail where he will await the extradition process.

US federal prosecutors said he hid assets from the Internal Revenue Service, including real estate property, a vehicle and a yacht, in other peoples name. The US indictment alleged that he evaded taxes and wilfully failed to file returns from 2014 to 2018, despite receiving "considerable income" from several sources.

To add to it, the securities and exchange commission also brought charges against the anti-virus maker, alleging that he made over $23.1 million in undisclosed compensation from false and misleading cryptocurrency recommendation.

Following his arrest, his Instagram account posted a "Free McAfee" message with a photo of him. However, the person running the account did not return a message seeking comment.

If he gets convicted of all charges, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

McAfee in recent years has had several incidents with the law. Sometime in 2012, he became a subject of question following the unsolved death of a neighbour in Belize. He denied knowing anything about the murder, though was worried that he may have been the attackers intended target.

Sill in Belize, McAfee fled the country when the police found him to be living with a 17-year-old girl and discovered a large arsenal of weapons in his home.

The anti-virus maker was also arrested in 2015 in the US for driving under the influence and possession of a gun while under the influence.

In July 2019, he was released from detention in the Dominican Republic after he and five others travelling on a yacht were suspected of carrying high-calibre weapons, ammunition and military-style gear.
