Facebook will again, pay people to monitor how they use their phone and apps installed on it. The social media giant on Tuesday launched an app called 'Study from Facebook' that will pay users to share information about how they use their phone and apps installed on it.

February this year, Facebook shut down its user-tracking app research app called Facebook Research, after drawing criticism for infringing on privacy and violating App Store guidelines.

According to Facebook, the Study from Facebook app is different from the previous two and was built from the scratch. Facebook says it will collect the following information in the persons device:
  • The apps installed on a participant's phone
  • The amount of time spent using those apps
  • Participant's country, device and network type
  • App activity names, which may show us the names of app features participants are using.
Facebook says it won't collect users IDs, passwords and other private information, and as well won't sell information from the app to third-parties or use it to target ads.

"Study from Facebook does not collect user IDs, passwords, or any of the participant's content, such as photos, videos, or messages," Facebook said. "We also don't sell information from the app to third parties or use it to target ads, and it is not added to a participant's Facebook account if they have one."

Apart from gathering valuable data to give it insight how people use its competitors service, Facebook assures the safety of users information. The social giant says it will keep the collection of data down to the minimum and will also keep reminding users that it is collecting their data.

"We have a responsibility to keep people's information safe and secure. With this app, we're collecting the minimum amount of information needed to help us build better products. People often have a lot of apps on their phones, so we'll periodically remind participants that they are a part of a program. They'll also have the opportunity to review the information they're sharing with us," Facebook said.

Facebook didn't say how much that it will pay participants of the program, participants will need to have a Paypal account to get paid

Study from Facebook will be available to people of 18 years and above in the US and India, though the it says it will expand to other countries over time.

The Study from Facebook app is available for Android users alone, for now.
