Social network giant Facebook is developing a new messaging app called Threads in an attempt to take on rival multimedia messaging app Snapchat. The app will allow users to share their status, location, and other information with closest friends.

According to The Verge, the thread app which is currently undergoing internal test at Facebook is meant to be a companion to photo-sharing app Instagram.

Threads "is designed as a companion app to Instagram, invites users to automatically share their location, speed, and battery life with friends, along with more typical text, photo, and video messages using Instagram's creative tools," The Verge said.

While users of the Thread will be able to update their status manually, Facebook will provide them option to opt into automatic sharing. The app will update the status of the user sharing information with their friends such as location, speed and more.

However, Facebook won't allow the app to share users real-time location. Instead, the app will notify the users friends that the user is "on the move."

Users will also be able to message as all the messages from friends will appear in a central feed. There will also be green dots to indicate which of your friends that are active.

Thread users will also be able to view in the Thread app stories their friends posted on Instagram. Users will also be able to capture images and videos in the Thread app.

For now, we don't know when Facebook will release the app, or if it will even see daylight as was with the case with "Direct", a standalone camera messaging app which Instagram killed early this year.
