According to statistics published by analytical company SensorTower on the "Top Apps Worldwide for January 2021 by Downloads", Telegram was downloaded 63 million times last month which is 3.8 times its download in January 2020.

24% of the total downloads came from India which accounted for 15 million of the 63 million new Telegram signups, followed by Indonesia at 10%.

Second place on the list was TikTok with 62 million installs. The countries with the largest number of TikTok installs came from Douyin in China at 17%, followed by the United stated at 10%. Mind you, TikTok is still banned in India following the governments decision last year to block several Chinese apps.

Signal and Facebook took the third and fourth positions, while WhatsApp slided to fifth on the list of the top 5 most installed non-gaming apps worldwide for the month of January 2021.

WhatsApp, in December took the third place both in the total standings and individual ratings for iOS and Android, while in November it was in the lead in the total standings for Android. However, its controversial provicy policy drove many users away to rival messaging platforms, making it to slide from its third position in December 2020 to fifth in January 2021.

Signal, on the other hand, did not make it into the top 10 in all three categories in December 2020, but surfaced in all categories in January 2021.
