A mafia fugitive who escaped prison 20 years ago in Italy has been arrested by authorities after appearing on Google Maps images in Spain.
According to Italian newspaper la Repubblica, Gioacchino Gammino, 61, was captured by the Spanish police on December 17, 2021, in a town called Galapagar, located north of Spain's capital, Madrid.

La Repubblica reports that Gammino was a member of the Sicilian Stidda Mafia group who escaped a Rome jail in 2002, a year before he was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for murder.
Investigators were drawn to a 2018 Google Maps Street View image of Gammino talking to another man in front of a small produce shop in Galapagar, where he lived under a false name and ran a restaurant.
A video released by Spain's National Police shows Gammino under guard in Madrid.
That's pretty wild that the Google car was this guy's downfall. I mean, what are the odds a fugitive in another country that has been on the run for 20 years gets ID'd by a Google car. He had a good run, I guess.
