Facebook is developing its own operating system to remove its dependency on Google's Android OS for its future hardware products such as Oculus and Portal.

The social media giant has hired Mark Lucovsky, the ex-Microsoft engineer who was part of the team who aided in the development of the Windows NT OS to spearhead the development of the new Facebook OS.

Sometime ago, Facebook developed prototypes of a custom operating system for Home, though at that time it still proceeded with Android.

According to The Information, the social giant is trying to get an ecosystem similar to Apple's "walled garden".

"We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us," Andrew Bosworth, Facebook's head of AR and VR. "We don't think we can trust the marketplace or competitor to ensure that's the case. And so we're gonna do it ourselves."

Facebook wants to develop all its future hardware, processors and operating system so as to free itself the dependency on Android. However, given Facebook's bad history in handling user's data and privacy, it will have to do more in convincing users to switch if the OS eventually sees day light.

The company is also rumoured to be working on AR glasses, code named Orion, said to have a brain-computer interface for controlling it.

For now, isn't any word on when Facebook's new OS will arrive, hardware development or how it plans to challenge the likes of Google's Android and Apple's iOS dominating the smartphone world.
