The Nigerian government yesterday announced that it has "indefinitely suspended" Twitter's operation in the country, following the company's decision to delete a tweet by the Nigerian president.
"The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria," the Ministry of Information and Culture said in a statement made via Twitter.

The decision to suspend Twitter's operation in the country comes two days after the microblogging company, on Tuesday, deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari that was widely perceived as offensive.
In the tweet, the Nigerian president threatened to deal with people in the country from the Southeast region, whom he blamed for recurring attacks on public infrastructure in the region.
"Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigeria Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand," the Tuesday tweet from the Nigerian president read, making reference to the Nigerian civil war that took place between 1967 to 1970.
However, many Nigerians flagged the tweet which led the company to take down the tweet.
Nigeria's Ministry of Information and Culture accused the social media giant of allowing its platform to be used "for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria's corporate existence."
In-suite, Nigeria's Information Minister, Mr. Lai Mohammed, criticized Twitter's action and accused it of "double standards."
