According to research firm StatCounter, the statistics includes only the devices that are connected to the internet. The report which tracks the combined share of usage across desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone puts Windows at 37.91% while Android leads by 37.93%.

"This is a milestone in technology history and the end of an era," Aodhan cullen, CEO of StatCounter said. "It marks the end of Microsoft's leadership worldwide of the OS market which it has held since the 1980's. It also represents a major breakthrough for Android which held just 2.4% of the global internet usage share only five year old".                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            The Windows operating system which still stand strong as the number one OS, occupying 84% when it comes to the PC market, still has the upper hands in North America and Europe but continents like Asia and Africa have most of their internet activity done on their Android device, probably due to the high cost of these computers.

"Windows won the desktop war but the battlefield moved on," Cullen said. "It will be difficult for Microsoft to make inroads in Mobile but the next paradigm shift might give it the opportunity to regain dominance. That could be in Augmented Reality, Al, voice or Continuum (A product that aims to replace the desktop and smartphone with a single powered Microsoft-powered phone)."
