An unopened rare copy of the original Super Mario Bros. video game, first released by Nintendo in 1985 has sold for a world record price of $100,150 at an auction.

According to Heritage Auctions, this copy of the Super Mario Bros. which was sold for the staggering amount was one of the few sealed copies released as part of a test market launch for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985 and 1986.

"Beyond the artistic and historical significance of this game is its supreme state of preservation," co-founder and chief grader of Wata Games, Kenneth Thrower said.

Not only is this game the only known "sticker sealed" copy of Super Mario Bros. in existence, the game is over 30 years, got certified as Near Mint and as well a "Sealing Rating" of A++ by Wata Games which also adds to its rarity.

"Super Mario Bros. is not only the most recognizable game of all time, it saved the video game industry in 1985," said Wata Games President, Denix Kahn. "In terms of rarity, popularity, and relevance to collectors, this game has it all. Mario is the most recognizable fictional or non-fictional character in the world, more so than even Mickey Mouse. Super Mario Bros. launched the largest game franchise and this copy is the only known sealed example from Nintendo's test market release."
