Some days ago the military in Myanmar overthrew the government and took control of power, while detaining elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other members of her party.

There have been street protests in several parts of the country in opposition to the Junta. However, the opposition emerged very strongly on WhatsApp and Facebook's 22 million Myanmar users which are the country's main internet platforms.

To stop the protest and "ensure stability" in the country, the military has directed all telecommunication companies in the country "to temporarily block social media service Facebook." This block also affects WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

Though Facebook was still available in some parts of Myanmar, especially the second city of Mandalay, we can't tell how long before the block becomes nationwide and can't trust the Junta's date of February 7 to unblock the social media networks.

In this post we have listed some free Virtual Private Network (VPN) apps that can bypass the restriction in place by the government.
