Internet shutdowns have become a tool for digital repression in different countries around the world. Countries like Iran, India, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Myanmar, and many other non-democratic countries, at a point in time, have been blocked from accessing social media sites or even cut off completely from the Internet. Well, Nigeria is the latest boy on the bloc to join the crew.

Yesterday, the Nigerian government announced that it was "indefinitely" suspending Twitter from operating in Nigeria after the company deleted the country's president's post.

Using the same cover that other repressive governments have done in the past, the Nigerian government highlighted legitimate democratic fears and as well, accused the US social media company of allowing its platform to be used "for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria's corporate existence."

We checked with our readers yesterday and Twitter was still accessible. However, the majority of our readers in Nigerian as of this afternoon have been having issues connecting to Twitter. While some managed to connect, it took very long to load. Eventually, the connection will be cut off.

Reuters confirmed Twitter inaccessible on network providers such as Airtel and Nigeria's biggest provider MTN. We confirmed Twitter to be blocked on network carriers such as GLO, Spectranet, and Ntel.

If you happen to be among those affected, do not worry about connectivity issues for we have an easy fix to your problem.
